Takatori ware

Japanese:
Takatori ware

A representative early modern pottery kiln in Fukuoka Prefecture (Chikuzen). It is said to have originated when feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa (1568-1623) ordered potter Yasan (Japanese name Takatori Yashiro) to open the kiln from the Korean Peninsula. The Takuma Kiln (Eimanji, Nogata City) at the foot of Mt. Takatori is said to be the first kiln, followed by Uchigaiso Kiln (Tonno, Nogata City) built in 1614 (Keicho 19). Other kilns scattered around include Kamihata Kiln (Okagaki Town), Yamada Kiln (Kama City), and Sengoku Kiln (Miyawaka City), and the kilns producing early Takatori ware (Old Takatori) are relatively widespread, but the products of the Uchigaiso Kiln in particular are excellent, and show a strong influence of Mino ware (Gifu Prefecture) tea ware. In 1630 (Kan'ei 7), the main kiln moved to Shirahatayama in Iizuka City, and they established a unique style of combining glossy brown glazes and opaque white glazes with refined vessels that were in keeping with the tastes of the time. Influenced by Kobori Enshu, they produced many excellent tea utensils such as tea caddies, water jars, tea bowls, mukouzuki, and hand bowls, and were praised as Enshu Takatori. In 1665 (Kanbun 5), the kiln moved further into the countryside to Koishiwara village (Toho village) in Asakura county, where it continues to produce mainly tea utensils to this day.
