Mount Takatori

Japanese: 鷹取山 - たかとりやま

A mountain located in the northern part of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture, on the border between the cities of Zushi and Yokosuka. It is a hill with an elevation of 139m, and near the summit, stone mining since the Meiji period has exposed cliffs of tuffaceous sandstone, creating a strange sight. A rock-carved Buddha has been carved on the mountaintop, and it is also used as a practice area for rock climbing. On the Tokyo Bay side, residential areas come up close to the summit, but on the Sagami Bay side, greenery remains, and a hiking trail connects the mountainside to Jinmu-ji Temple, an old Tendai sect temple. 神奈川県三浦半島北部，逗子市と横須賀市の境にある山。標高139mの丘陵で，頂上付近は明治以降の石材採取によって凝灰岩質砂岩の岩壁が露出し，奇景を呈する。山頂部には磨崖仏が彫刻されているほか，ロッククライミングの練習場としても利用されている。東京湾側は住宅地が山頂近くまで迫っているが，相模湾側は緑が残り，山腹にある天台宗の古寺，神武寺とあわせてハイキングコースとなっている。【伊倉退蔵】
