Cape Manazuru

Japanese:
Cape Manazuru

A small peninsula jutting out from the coast of Manazuru Town near the southwestern tip of Kanagawa Prefecture. It is also called the Manazuru Peninsula. The name Manazuru is said to come from the fact that the peninsula resembles a crane with its wings spread. It stretches for about three kilometers from the south of Manazuru Port to the southeast and is made up of lava flows from the Hakone volcano (ancient outer rim), forming a plateau. The tip forms a cliff, and the sea below is dotted with strange rocks of the same nature as the peninsula, three of the larger ones being called "Mitsuishi." The surrounding rocky shores are rich in marine flora and fauna. The peninsula is covered in tropical evergreen broadleaf forests such as camphor and sudajii, and is of great academic value. The old camphor trees are very charming, and the whole area is designated as the Prefectural Manazuru Peninsula Natural Park, with particular attention being paid to protecting the climax forest of Castanopsis sieboldii. Many people visit throughout the year, including anglers and those who enjoy playing on the rocks. It is about a 10-minute bus ride from JR Manazuru Station on the Tokaido Main Line.
