Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper

German botanical geographer. Born in Strasbourg. His father was also a botanist, and three other famous botanists came from his family. After earning his doctorate at the University of Strasbourg, he joined the laboratory of Anton de Bary (1831-1888) and devoted himself to plant research. In his early years, he investigated the process of starch granule formation in plant cells. In 1882, he moved to the Botanical Institute at the University of Bonn, where he spent 16 and a half years. He made five long-term overseas trips, mainly to the tropics, and deepened his academic philosophy of trying to establish a physiological basis for the relationship between plant survival and the environment. He joined the German Deep Sea Expedition that began in 1898. He boarded the Valdivia and surveyed the Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans, but his malignant malaria, which he had contracted during that time, worsened, and he died in Basel. His major work was Pflanzengeographie auf physiologischer Grundlage (1898), entitled "Physiological Geography of Plants."
