A major audio manufacturer. Top class in car audio products. Also a leading manufacturer of plasma TVs and DVD recorders. In 1938, Matsumoto Nozomi founded Fukuin Shokai Denki Seisakusho, a speaker manufacturer. In 1947, the company was established as Fukuin Denki. In 1961, the company changed its name to its current name. Starting out as a speaker manufacturer, the company rapidly grew as an audio manufacturer. In the late 1970s, the company developed LDs (laser discs) and entered the AV field. In the 1980s, the audio division was in a slump, so the company restructured and focused on creating software for LDs, while also successfully entering the mobile communications business with car navigation systems. In recent years, the company has expanded its DVD recorder and plasma TV businesses, but the 2008 global recession and the strong yen hit the company hard, causing sales to stagnate for its mainstay car navigation systems and resulting in a large deficit. Headquarters in Tokyo. Capital in 2011 was 87.2 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 457.5 billion yen.
