The concept of international politics regards the sovereign state as the basic unit and focuses on the politics between such states. The concept of world politics, which is distinct from this, regards the world society as the basic unit and focuses on politics at various levels of world society and their overall relationships. This reflects the reality and awareness that the world is a single system in today's world, where the economy and information are becoming globalized while the global limits of the environment and resources are becoming apparent.

国際政治international politicsという概念は，まず主権国家を基本単位として措定し，そうした国家間の政治に着目する視座を示す。これと区別された世界政治という概念は，まず世界という社会を基本単位として措定し，世界社会のさまざまなレベルでの政治やその全体的関連に着目する視座を示す。経済･情報等が世界化する半面，環境･資源の地球的限界が顕在化した現代で，世界は単一のシステムだという現実と意識が形成されつつあることの反映である。
