Died: July 26, 1881. Oulton Broad. British author. Born into a military family, he followed his father around the country, and from the age of 20 he began a wandering life, traveling to Russia, Portugal, Spain, and other countries. He also translated some works, making full use of his outstanding language skills. He is known for novels such as Lavengro (1851) and The Romany Rye (1857), which tell of his experience of joining a group of Roma and wandering the English countryside, and The Bible in Spain (1842), a travelogue that describes his experience in spreading the Bible in Spain.
