Japanese: 鷹飼 - たかがい

The act of raising falcons and engaging in falconry. It usually refers to people who make a living from it. There are clay figurines of people with falcons on their shoulders, and in the entry for September 1, 43rd year of Emperor Nintoku's reign in the Nihon Shoki, it is written that Sake no Kimi caught a falcon at Yosami no Miyake, said that it was a bird called Kuchi, which is common in Baekje, tamed it, and presented it to the Emperor, who went falconry and established the Takakaibe for the first time. Thus, falconry, which entered the Japanese archipelago via the Korean Peninsula at the latest by the Kofun period, is thought to have had a military significance, and the Chief Falconer, established under the Ritsuryo system, was a vassal of the Ministry of Military Affairs.

鷹を飼養して鷹狩をすること。多くはそれを職とする人をいう。鷹を肩にのせた人物埴輪があり，《日本書紀》仁徳天皇43年9月1日条には，依網屯倉（よさみのみやけ）で捕獲された鷹について，酒君（さけのきみ）がこれは百済に多くいるクチという名の鳥だといい，馴らして天皇に献上，天皇は鷹狩を行って，このとき初めて鷹甘部（たかかいべ）を定めたとある。このように，遅くとも古墳時代までに朝鮮半島を経て日本列島に入ってきた鷹飼は，軍事的意味をもっていたと思われ，令制で設置された主鷹司は兵部省の被官とされている。
