Year of death: 1827.10.3 (Bunsei 10.8.13) Year of birth: 1748.2.29 A Chinese poet of the mid- to late Edo period. Originally of the Suganami clan, he changed his surname to Suga. His given name was Shinshu, his pen name was Reikyo, and he was commonly known as Taichu (or Taichu). His pen name was Chazan, and his posthumous name was Bunkyo Sensei. He was the eldest son of Suganami Kyusuke (pen name Chohei), who worked in agriculture and sake brewing in Kannabe, Bingo Province (Hiroshima Prefecture). In 1766 (Meiwa 3), at the age of 19, he went to Kyoto and studied Zhu Xi philosophy under Nawa Rodo. After that, he often traveled to Kamigata and was friends with poets from the Kontonshisha Society in Osaka, such as Yori Shunsui, Katsushikin, and Nakai Chikuzan. In the early Tenmei era, at the age of 34, he opened a private school in his hometown of Kannabe, called Koba Yuhi Murasha, and became involved in educating village children. This later became Gojuku, became widely known, and was renamed Renjuku, with Rai Sanyo, Hojo Kasutei, and others serving as school leaders. As a poet, he excelled in realistic rural poetry in the style of Song poetry, and was loved by people for his village master-like personality.
