A school of Buddhist sculptors who were active in creating statues mainly in Nara from the early to mid-Kamakura period. They are so named because their names included the character "zen" (zen), such as Zenen (years of birth and death unknown) and Zenkei (?-1257). This school seems to have had a close relationship with Eison, who restored Saidaiji Temple, and statues at Saidaiji, such as the statue of Aizen Myoo made by Zenen and the standing statue of Shaka Nyorai made by Zenkei, were made at Eison's request, and Zenkei's son Zenharu (years of birth and death unknown) created a statue of Eison at the age of 80 (1280). As Nara Buddhist sculptors, they show a style connected to the Kei school, but they are somewhat different and also show a style that could be said to be a vestige of Fujiwara sculpture.
