Japanese: 高尾平兵衛 - たかお・へいべえ
Takao Heibei - Takao Heibei
Year of death: June 26, 1923
Year of birth: December 1, 1896 (Meiji 29)
A militant social activist of the Taisho period. Born into a merchant family in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture. After working in the confectionery wholesale business, he joined the anarchist Kitafu-kai and then the mining labor movement. In 1920, he published Kropotkin's Law and Power in mimeograph form, for which he was sentenced to five months in prison and fined. In 1921, he joined the Labor Society led by Yoshida Hajime and others, and together with Miyajima Sukeo and Wada Kiichiro, he founded the Kokuhyo-kai (the successor to the Kitafu-kai). In the same year, he was sentenced to two months in prison for incitement in the dispute at the Ashio Copper Mine. In 1922, he was the most vocal opponent of the bill to crack down on radical social movements. In the same year, he traveled to Mokswa, where he met with Lenin. After returning to Japan, he joined the Communist Party, but soon left and planned to form an Ana-Bol joint front. In 1839, he formed the Front Alliance with Yoshida, Ishiguro Eiichiro, Hiraiwa Iwao, and others, and went to protest at the home of Yonemura Kaichiro, head of the anti-communist group, but was shot dead by Yonemura with a pistol. He was buried in Japan's first social funeral.
