Before World War II, the company flourished as a mining development company in various parts of the South Seas, but lost its overseas assets after the war. After the war, however, it was reborn as a chemical company focusing on titanium oxide (number one in Japan) and pesticides. Its head office is in Nishi-ku, Osaka. The company was founded in 1919 when Ishihara Koichiro (1890-1970), who was engaged in rubber cultivation in the Malay Peninsula, discovered the Sri Medan mine in Johor State, and in September 1920, established the Nanyo Mining Company as a limited partnership in Osaka to commercialize it. In 1924, the company entered the shipping business to transport ore. In 1929, the name was changed to Ishihara Sangyo Kaiun Limited Partnership Company (incorporated company in 1934).
