Japanese: 高井戸 - たかいど

The place name is now in the southern part of Suginami-ku, Tokyo, and is inherited by Kamitakaido, Shimotakaido, Takaido-higashi, and Takaido-nishi. It was formerly part of Tama-gun, Musashi Province. It was also written as Takaido. During the Edo period, it flourished as a post station on the Koshu road, and Takaido-juku was the first post station on the road until Naito-shinjuku started its horse-drawn carriage service in 1699. Takaido-juku is a collective name for Shimotakaido-juku (east of Edo) and Kamitakaido-juku (west of Edo), which were training post stations. Shimotakaido-juku served on the first 15th of the month, and Kamitakaido-juku served on the last 15th of the month, and transported passengers between Naito-shinjuku and the next post station, Fuda-juku (also known as the Fuda Gojuku, now in Chofu City). Each post station had 25 people and 25 horses. In 1843, there was one head inn each at Kami-takaido and Shimo-takaido, and there were three inns at Shimotakaido and two at Kamitakaido (according to the Yadomura Daigaicho). When the Tamagawa Aqueduct was dug during the Shoo era (1652-1655), the village of Takaido was used for the canal, and the villagers moved to the land given to them in the northwest and developed Takaido Shinden, later changing their name to Naka-Takaido. In 1889, Kami-Takaido, Naka-Takaido and three other villages merged to form Takaido Village, and in 1926 it was incorporated as a town.

現在の東京都杉並区南部，上高井戸・下高井戸・高井戸東・高井戸西に引き継がれた地名。古くは武蔵国多摩郡のうち。高井土とも書いた。江戸時代には甲州道中の宿駅として栄え，内藤新宿が1699年に伝馬業務を開始するまでは高井戸宿が同道中の第１宿であった。高井戸宿は合宿である下高井戸宿（江戸寄り東方）と上高井戸宿（西方）の総称で，月の前半15日を下高井戸宿が，後半15日を上高井戸宿が勤め，内藤新宿と次宿である布田宿（布田五宿とも，現調布市）との間を継ぎ送った。宿建人馬はいずれも25人・25匹。1843年には上・下の高井戸宿に本陣各１があり，旅籠屋は下高井戸宿が３軒，上高井戸宿が２軒（《宿村大概帳》）。承応年間（1652年−1655年）の玉川上水開削時，高井戸村内が水路用地となり，北西方に与えられた代地に村人が移住して高井戸新田を開発，のち中高井戸村と改称。1889年上・中・下の高井戸村ほか３ヵ村が合併して高井戸村が成立，1926年に町制を施行。
