…A general term for monochrome paintings, usually with a clear outline in black on a white background, and in the narrow sense, monochrome profile portraits. This style of portrait is a simple and inexpensive work made by copying the shadow cast by a person's profile in strong light onto a piece of paper, often by reducing it mechanically. It was popular throughout Europe from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century. This was due in part to the fact that the physiognomist Larvater used it to illustrate his Treatise on Physiognomy, as the ability to capture a profile view using simple contour lines suited the neoclassical tastes of the time.
