It is a poisoning thought to occur when two or more specific foods are eaten at the same time, and is mostly just a superstition. There have been various stories about it since the Nara and Heian periods, but especially in the Muromachi period, it was written about in authoritative books and frightened people. The Shukaisho lists over 60 types, such as soba and wild boar, mochi and cold water, sake and crab, and it is also mentioned in Kaibara Ekiken's Yojokun. None of these have any scientific basis, and it is thought that they were said to warn people to be careful because some foods contain a lot of oil, some have hard muscle tissue that is prone to indigestion, and some lose their freshness easily.
