An island located in southeastern China across the 150-200 km wide Taiwan Strait to the east, across from Fujian Province. The collective name Taiwan consists of 86 islands, including the main island of Taiwan, 21 outlying islands, and 64 islands in the Penghu Islands. The total area, including the outlying islands, is 35,982 km2. This is about one-third the area of Fujian Province, and it is China's smallest province along with Hainan Province (Hainan Island). The total population is about 21.36 million (1995), with a population density of about 590 people/km2. Currently under the government of the Kuomintang, the provincial government is located in the southern suburbs of Taichung City.
