This national park (designated in 1941) consists of a large limestone cave in central Kentucky, USA. It covers an area of 208 km2. It contains ruins of ancient Indians, but was discovered by whites in 1798. It gained instant fame when the American army used the saltpeter in the caves as a raw material for gunpowder, which was in short supply during the Second War of 1812-14. The complex chain of limestone caves, including Mammoth Cave and Flint Cave, stretches to a total of 252 km in length, as far as we know now. The Echo River flows through the caves.
