A strait between Fujian Province in southeastern China and Taiwan Island, part of the East China Sea. It is about 380 km long from north to south, and only 130 km wide from east to west at its narrowest point, 150-160 km wide at the northern end, and 250-260 km wide at the southern end. The water is mostly less than 100 meters deep, but the Penghu Channel between the Penghu Islands and Taiwan Island near the southern end is 100-200 meters deep. It has been used as a route for north-south transportation along the coast of the mainland since ancient times, and Japanese red seal ships also used it as a route. On the Fujian side, there are long-established ports such as Fuzhou, Quanzhou, and Xiamen. Even today, Fuzhou, Xiamen, and Kaohsiung on Taiwan Island are thriving commercial ports. The islands of Kinmen and Matsu on the mainland were occupied by the Kuomintang army and turned into fortresses. This area is rich in fish species and is a good fishing ground, and it also has an abundance of sand for construction materials, and offshore oil fields have also been discovered there.
