1730? -78 (Kyoho 15? - An'ei 7) A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. His surname was Imada and given name Tametora. Later he adopted the surname Yoshibun. He was also known by the names Banan and Rosensha. He was a samurai of the Tokushima domain, but retired. Around 1766 (Meiwa 3), he went to Kyoto and became a literary scholar, and studied under Buson, becoming active as Buson's leading disciple. In 1773 (An'ei 2), he became a master in Osaka and associated with many of the haiku poets of the Chukaku revival. He later became involved in a scandal and moved to Hyogo, where he died in obscurity. He was disliked by others for his hot-headed personality, but he was sincere and pure-hearted, and composed clear, straightforward, and poetic haiku. "The sea is buried in the sails, it's a spring evening" (Rosen Kusen). [Tanaka Michio] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
