Okasho - Okasho

Japanese: 桜花賞 - おうかしょう

This is one of the classic races in JRA. It takes place at Hanshin Racecourse every year in early (or mid) April. Only thoroughbred 3-year-old fillies can participate. The distance is 1600m and the weight is 55kg. Modeled after the 1000 Guineas, a classic race held at Newmarket Racecourse in Newmarket, England, it was established in 1939 at Nakayama Racecourse as the Nakayama Special for 4-Year-Old Fillies, a distance of 1800m. In 1947 it was moved to Kyoto Racecourse, the distance was shortened to 1600m, and it was given its current name. In 1950 it was moved to Hanshin Racecourse. It was cancelled in 1945 and 1946.

中央競馬のいわゆるクラシック競走の一つ。毎年 4月上旬 (または中旬) に阪神競馬場で行なわれる。出走馬はサラブレッド系 3歳牝馬限定。距離 1600m，負担重量 55kg。イギリスのニューマーケットにある，ニューマーケット競馬場で行なわれるクラシック競走の 1000ギニーに範をとり，1939年中山競馬場で距離 1800mの中山4歳牝馬特別として創設された。1947年に京都競馬場に移り，距離も 1600mに短縮，現在の名称となった。1950年阪神競馬場に移った。1945，1946年は中止された。
