Japanese: モミジ

Another name for the Japanese maple, a representative species of maple. Maples are also sometimes referred to collectively as maples. The name "momiji" is also given to the phenomenon of leaves turning red or yellow in autumn, and to the tree species that do so. Originally, the name "momiji" referred to trees that turn red in autumn and the leaves that turn red in autumn. Later, the name "momiji" came to be used for species with beautiful autumn leaves, and in particular, the Takao maple (Japanese maple), which is common on Mount Takao in Kyoto and is famous for its autumn leaves, came to be called "momiji."

カエデの代表種であるイロハカエデの別称。また総称的な名前としてカエデ類をモミジ類とも呼ぶこともある。さらに紅葉や黄葉する現象や，そのような樹種に対しても〈もみじ〉の名前がつけられる。もともとは秋に紅葉する樹やその紅葉のことを〈もみじ〉と呼んでいた。のちに紅葉の美しい種類に対して〈もみじ〉の名が使われるようになり，特に，京都の紅葉で有名な高雄山に多いカエデのタカオモミジ(イロハカエデ)がモミジと呼ばれることが多くなったのである。
