1592‐1643 The second emperor of the Qing Dynasty in China. Reigned 1626-43. Posthumous name Taizong. Eighth son of Taizu (Nurhaci). A highly acclaimed military commander, he distinguished himself under Taizu in the Battle of Sarhu, and was one of the four great Beiles who handled national affairs. Immediately after ascending to the throne, he began reforming the Eight Banner system and worked to strengthen the emperor's dictatorial power. After completing these reforms, he became emperor again in 1636, named the country Da Qing, and changed the era name to Sutoku. After ascending to the throne, he pursued peace talks with the Ming Dynasty, with Shanhaiguan as the border, and in 1627, he chased King Injo of Korea to Ganghwa Island, subjugated him, and concluded a peace treaty with Korea.
