A unique alphabet used to write Thai. It consists of 44 consonants, 14 vowels, 4 syllabaries, and 4 tone marks. It is written horizontally from left to right, without breaks between words. It originated from the Sukhothai script, which was created by King Ramakhamhaeng of the Sukhothai dynasty at the end of the 13th century, and has evolved to the present day through gradual changes in the number of characters and the shape of the characters. It is descended from South Indian scripts, and is directly based on the Khmer script. The oldest surviving document dates from the end of the 13th century.
