1693‐1768 Pelham Hollis was a British aristocrat and statesman of the 18th century. He was the eldest son of Thomas Pelham, 1st Baron, and inherited the family line of his uncle John Hollis, changing his surname to Pelham Hollis and acquiring vast estates and the title of duke. He was Secretary of State for the Walpole administration (1724-54), and after Walpole's resignation (1742), he and his brother Pelham continued in government. After Pelham's death, he succeeded him as Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1754), but resigned (1756), taking responsibility for the defeat in the opening battles of the Seven Years' War.
