Swiss poet. Although he showed atheistic tendencies from an early age, he studied theology and served as a pastor, then went to Russia and spent eight years as a teacher. After returning to Russia, he worked as a newspaper editor, but from 1893 he devoted himself to writing in Lucerne. This Nobel Prize-winning poet was active in many areas, but his specialty was epic poetry. Influenced by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and conscious of the conflict between artists and citizens, the poet attempted to express heroic figures as elites seeking beauty in classical epic poetry. "Prometheus and Epimetheus" (1881) is a work that sings of the noble Prometheus who dares to reject the power that rules the world in order to protect his "soul." "Olympian Spring" (1900-05) depicts the Greek gods overcoming harsh fate, while also speaking of a pessimistic view of the universe and a heroic renunciation of happiness. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1919.
