Japanese: シラウオ(白魚) - シラウオ（英語表記）icefish

A fish of the family Icefish (illustration) in the order Salmoniformes. It has a small head and a slender body that is laterally compressed at the rear. When alive, it is slightly amber-colored and translucent, but when dead, it becomes white and opaque. There are two rows of small black spots on the ventral surface. Both males and females have no scales, except for a row of 16 to 18 large scales along the base of the male's anal fin. It has an oily fin behind the dorsal fin. In Japan, it is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. There is a landlocked type (total length 6.5 to 7 cm) that lives in Lake Kasumigaura, and a sea-run type (total length 9 to 10 cm) that descends to the sea during growth.

サケ目シラウオ科の魚（イラスト）。頭が小さく体は細長く体の後方は側扁する。生きているときにはややあめ色を呈して半透明であるが，死ぬと白く不透明になる。腹面に2列の小黒点が並んでいる。雄のしりびれの基底に沿って大きなうろこが16～18枚1列に並んでいるほかは，雌雄ともにうろこがない。背びれの後方にあぶらびれをもっている。日本では北海道から九州にかけて分布している。霞ヶ浦における陸封型(全長6.5～7cm)と成長期に海に下る降海型(全長9～10cm)がある。
