１台の大型コンピューターを同時に，多数の使用者が時分割(じぶんかつ)して共同利用するシステムの名称。TSS（time sharing systemの略）とも。時分割方式。コンピューターの中央処理装置が高速度処理能力を有するのを利用し，分割された時間内に多数の端末装置の一つとデータのやりとりができるように直結するもの。時分割間隔を細かくとるため，各利用者は他の利用者を意識せずに，あたかも中央処理装置を専有しているかのように使える。オンライン・リアルタイム・システムなどに利用。
