...These pampas grasses represent the abode and possession of the gods, and at the Kashima Shrine in Mito, a new roof is made of pampas grass for the festival, and at the Misayama Festival in Suwa, a temporary pampas grass hut called Hoya is also made. Also, the custom of eating udon noodles on Hangesho with pampas grass chopsticks is seen mainly in the Kanto region, and is called Niibashi or Aobashi. Pampas grass chopsticks are also used to pick up bones, and in some places, because they are the chopsticks of Buddha, chopsticks should not be made from them.
