Born: April 23, 1813, Milan Died September 8, 1853. A French literary historian from Marseille, and a leader in the Catholic movement. He promoted the Catholic movement from his student days. In 1833, he founded the Vincentian Society of Paris. He appointed Lacordère to lecture at Notre Dame in 1833-34. He became a doctor of law in 1836, and a doctor of literature in 1839 for his theory on Dante. He taught at the University of Lyon and in Paris, and was a great success, lecturing on early German, Italian, and English literature, as well as early medieval literature. His achievements include introducing Dante and Francis of Assisi, shedding light on medieval civilization. During this time, he devoted himself to the charity work of the Vincentian Society, and became its vice-president.
