A commercial and industrial city in the western part of Assam, in the northeastern corner of India. Population 584,000 (1991). It lies on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, and is expanding onto the north bank as well. The surrounding area produces rice, jute, cotton, and oil crops, which are all collected and distributed here. Light industries such as tea and cotton processing, soap, and oil refining are located here, and it is said that Paragyotishapura, the capital of the Kamarupa Kingdom, which flourished in Assam during the Maurya and Kushan dynasties from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD, was located here. On Nilachar Hill, 3km southwest, is the Kamakhya Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which attracts Hindu pilgrims from all over India. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
インド北東端アッサム州西部の商工業都市。人口58万4000(1991)。ブラフマプトラ川南岸にあり,北岸にも拡大しつつある。周辺は米,ジュートのほか綿花,油料作物を産し,ここで集散される。茶および綿花の加工,セッケン,製油などの軽工業が立地,前4~後3世紀のマウリヤおよびクシャーナ朝時代に,アッサムに栄えたカーマルーパ王国の都パラーギョティシャプラはここにあったといわれる。南西3kmのニラチャールの丘にはシバ神をまつるカーマーキヤー寺院があり,インド各地からヒンドゥー教巡礼者を集める。
