Kure [city] - Kure
Hiroshima City is located in the southern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, and consists of the eastern coast of Hiroshima Bay and part of the Geiyo Islands. It was incorporated as a city in 1902. The central city, where the Kure Line runs, was established in 1889 as the site of the Naval Naval Base. Since the establishment of the Naval Arsenal and the Aircraft Arsenal, it has developed as a military city and naval port, with a population of 400,000 during World War II. After the war, it restarted as an industrial city, and after 1950, it became a coastal industrial area with large companies such as shipbuilding, steelmaking, and pulp concentrating mainly in the central city, Hiro District in the east, and Nigata District. Traditional industries such as sake brewing and file manufacturing are also thriving, and whetstones and fountain pens are its specialties. In recent years, there has been a remarkable expansion into high-technology industries, including the manufacture of semiconductor grinding and cutting equipment. It has been designated as the Hiroshima Central Technopolis. Mandarin oranges are grown on the slopes of the islands. The former naval port site is now home to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force base and the Japan Coast Guard Academy. Kegoya, the starting point of the Ondo Bridge, and Nigata, the starting point of the Geiyo Islands shipping route, are key locations for inland sea transportation. The Yasumiyama area is part of the Setonaikai National Park. Kure University, which opened in 1995, and Kinki University's Faculty of Engineering are both located here. In April 2003, it merged with Shimokamagari Town in Aki District, and in April 2004, it merged with Kawajiri Town in Toyota District. In March 2005, Ondo Town, Kurahashi Town, Kamagari Town in Aki District, and Yasuura Town, Toyohama Town, and Toyo Town in Toyota District were incorporated. 352.80 km2 . Population: 239,973 (2010).
