It is divided into the Sauerland in the south, the Münsterland in the north, the Helweglandschaften between the two regions, and the Weserbergland in the east. The Sauerland is mountainous, between the Sieg River in the south and the Ruhr and Möhne Rivers in the north, and is not suitable for agriculture, so mining and industry developed there early on.
