José Bonifacio (1763-1838), a liberal nationalist and the real promoter of Brazilian independence, was in charge of the moral and intellectual education of the young emperor. Unlike his father, he was born and raised in Brazil, and was intelligent, gentle, and modest in nature, so the people were eagerly awaiting his declaration of adulthood, as he was seen as a suitable person to rule the empire. …
