The award was established in 1951 by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) to commemorate the achievements of American statistician Deming in improving quality control in Japanese industry. It is awarded once a year to individuals who have contributed to the practice or theory of quality control, and to companies that have achieved an extremely high level of quality control and have made a great contribution to society.
