Book design (binding)

Japanese: 装丁(装幀) - そうてい

This word refers to the shaping of a book and the method of doing so. According to the Dictionary of Bibliography by Nagasawa Kikuya (1979), binding is the process of making a painting or calligraphy into a hanging scroll or frame, and should be written as <sōtei>, with tei meaning to put together neatly, but tei is only used in a few places. Since there is no '幀' in the common kanji, the phonetic 'cho' is often used. One of the reasons why the word <sōtei> has strayed from its original meaning and become so misused, so to speak, is that the work of making covers and linings for Japanese-bound books is similar to the work of mounting paintings and calligraphy.

書物を形づくること，その方法をいう言葉。長沢規矩也著《図書学辞典》(1979)によれば，装幀とは書画を掛物や額に仕立てることで，〈装訂〉と書くのが正しく，訂はきちんとまとめる意，とあるが，訂は一部でしか使われていない。常用漢字のなかに幀がないので，音だけ当てて丁を用いることが多い。〈装幀〉という言葉が本来の意味を離れて，いわば誤用が定着してしまった原因の一つには，和装本の表紙づくりや裏打ちの仕事が，書画を表装する仕事と似通っていたこともあげられよう。
