1905‐82 A Mexican painter, architect and printmaker. While he was influenced by the modernist movement, he also deeply considered indigenismo and worked throughout his life to establish his identity as a Mexican artist. In painting, he created works that made full use of trompe l'oeil in tempera techniques. In architecture, he was a pioneer of functionalist theory. The mural mosaic decorations at the Central Library of the National University of Mexico beautifully combine modern architecture and Indian tradition.
