Isis - Isis (English spelling)

Isis - Isis (English spelling)

A goddess worshipped in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Isis is the Greek pronunciation, and Sheth or Isheth in ancient Egyptian. She was one of the four gods born from the earth god Geb and the sky goddess Nut, the other three being the male gods Osiris and Set, and the goddess Nepthys. She married Osiris and gave birth to the male god Horus. According to Plutarch's Osiris Myth, after her husband Osiris was killed by Set and his body was thrown into the Nile River, Isis wandered around to find Osiris' body and bring him back to life. She also raised her son Horus to avenge his father, so she was considered a good wife and mother, that is, the epitome of a woman. On the other hand, she was worshipped throughout Egypt as a goddess of fertility associated with the sun and cows, and after Egypt declined, Isis worship became widespread in Greece and Rome. The Great Temple is located on the island of Philae in the middle of the Nile.
