A place where the mikoshi (portable shrine) that leaves the main shrine stays temporarily during shrine festivals. It is also called Otabi-no-miya, Ton-gu, or Mikoshi-yado. The first written reference to this was in the Hyakuren-sho, which states that the Gion Tabi-sho burned down in November 1159 (Heiji 1). As mikoshi developed, each shrine set up these, and as the use of mikoshi developed, some were temporary locations, others had luxurious buildings, and others rented from other companies, and the number of locations was not limited to just one. They could be located not far from the main shrine or several tens of kilometers away, and could stay anywhere from an hour to a whole day and night. Usually, ceremonies are held on the spot.
