…Dutch painter. His full name was Johannes Theodoor T. Born in Java, he was of English, Dutch and Javanese descent. He studied at the Academies of Amsterdam and Brussels, and started out with an impressionistic style of painting. After he became a member of the “Les Bains” (Group of Twenty) in 1885, he deepened his ties with Belgian symbolist painters and literary figures, while also assimilating the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and Braque during several stays in England, laying the foundations for symbolist painting in the Netherlands. …
