Apollo-Soyuz Joint Flight - Apollo-Soyuz Joint Flight
This was the first internationally joint manned space flight experiment conducted between the United States and the Soviet Union (now Russia). Its official name was the Apollo-Soyuz test project. It was planned based on the U.S.-Soviet Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, signed in May 1972, and its main purpose was to study a docking system for future U.S. and Soviet spacecraft. On July 15, 1975, the two-seater Soviet Soyuz spacecraft was launched, followed seven and a half hours later by the American Apollo spacecraft carrying three astronauts.
