School physical education

Japanese: 学校体育 - がっこうたいいく

Physical education is conducted under the responsibility of schools, such as elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, technical colleges, and universities. It is mainly aimed at children, pupils and students. There is physical education as a regular subject, extracurricular sports club activities, and instruction in sports club activities for students with excellent sports skills. In Japan, physical education as a subject for elementary, junior high and high schools follows the goals and content set out in the curriculum guidelines. Instruction in club activities and school events such as sports days is left to the discretion of each school.

小学校，中学校，高等学校，高等専門学校，大学など，学校の責任のもとに行なわれる体育。対象はおもに児童，生徒，学生である。正課としての教科体育と教科外の運動クラブ活動，スポーツ技能の優れた者のための運動部活動の指導とがある。教科体育は，日本では小・中・高等学校の場合，学習指導要領が示す目標，内容に従っている。クラブ活動や学校行事としての運動会などの指導は，それぞれの学校の自由にゆだねられている。
