A summer-green perennial plant of the Gesneriaceae family that grows on rocks and trees in temperate Japan (illustration). It is densely covered with white soft hairs all over. Numerous leaves grow at the base of a shortened underground stem. The leaves are broadly ovate with slightly pointed tips, circular to heart-shaped at the base, 4-10 cm long, and have petioles of roughly the same length. In early summer, a flower stalk of about 10 cm appears, and several to about 10 reddish-purple flowers are scattered about. The calyx has five deep lobes, the corolla is bilaterally symmetrical, the flower tube is well developed, and the tip is two-lipped, with the upper lip having two lobes and the lower lip having three lobes.

温帯日本の岩場や樹上に着生するイワタバコ科の夏緑多年草（イラスト）。全体に白色の軟毛を密生する。　短縮した地下茎に多数の葉を根生する。葉は広卵形で先端はややとがり，基部は円形から心臓形，長さ4～10cmで，ほぼ同長の葉柄がある。初夏，10cmあまりの花茎を出し，数個から10個あまりの紅紫色の花を散状につける。萼は5深裂，花冠は左右相称で花筒部が発達し，先端は2唇状で，上唇は2裂，下唇は3裂している。
