Maintenance feed - Ijishiryo

This refers to the feed that livestock need when they are stationary and just need to maintain life. It is differentiated from production feed, which is needed for production such as growth, pregnancy, lactation, fattening, egg production, wool laying, and labor. Maintenance feed is mainly used to generate body heat, as well as to supplement the activity of organs and various metabolic losses. Therefore, while calorific value is important, minimum amounts of protein, vitamins, and minerals must also be considered.

家畜が生命を維持するだけの静止の状態のときに必要とする飼料をいう。それ以外に、成長、妊娠、泌乳、肥育、産卵、産毛、労役などの生産に従事するために必要とする生産飼料と区別される。維持飼料は主として体温発生に役だつほか、臓器の活動、各種の代謝消耗を補うのに用いられる。したがって熱量が重視されるが、最小限のタンパク質やビタミン、ミネラルも考慮しなければならない。
