Shinbashi Enbujo Theater

Name of the theater. Planned in 1923 (Taisho 12) as a place for Tokyo geisha to showcase their skills, it was built in Kobikicho (currently Ginza 6-chome, Chuo Ward) mainly by the Shinbashi Geisha Association. It opened on April 1, 1925 with the first "Azuma Odori" performance. Kabuki, Shinkokugeki, Soganoya plays, etc. were performed here, but from 1940 (Showa 15) it signed an entertainment contract with Shochiku and performed various plays as Shochiku's main theater. In 1945, the interior was burned down during the war, but it was restored and reopened in 1948 (Showa 23). It closed in 1979 for a new building, and reopened in April 1982 as a modern theater inside a building (1-3 floors, seating capacity 1,428).
