An uprising that broke out in Shinano, Echigo, Kai and other areas due to damage caused by the circulation of counterfeit 2-bu coins. It is also known as the Counterfeit 2-bu Coin Riot. Charakkin refers to counterfeit 2-bu coins that circulated in the early Meiji period. They were minted in large quantities by various feudal domains and circulated widely to raise military funds during the Boshin War. This caused serious price hikes. In particular, in sericulture and silk-raising areas such as Koshinetsu, large amounts of the coins flowed in from Yokohama and other areas as payment for raw silk and silkworm eggs. Farmers, not knowing how to appraise them, accepted them and fell into difficulties due to the closure of currency and rising prices. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
