Ohrid (English spelling)

Japanese: オフリト（英語表記）Ohrid

A city on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid in the Republic of Macedonia, in southern Yugoslavia. Population 32,000 (1977). Conquered by the Bulgarians in the late 9th century, it became a base for missionary work among the Slavs. It is known for its many Byzantine art works from the Middle Byzantine period onwards. The oldest, the Cathedral of Sveta Sofia (11th century), has lost its original central dome and now has a basilica plan with a two-story west facade from the 14th century. The murals in the apse, including the Virgin and Child on the Throne and Communion, and the Ascension of Christ in the bema, are all examples from the 11th century.

ユーゴスラビア南部，マケドニア共和国のオフリト湖東岸の都市。人口3万2000(1977)。9世紀後半にブルガリア人に征服され，スラブ人への布教の拠点となる。中期以降のビザンティン美術の多いことで知られる。最も古いスベータ･ソフィヤ大聖堂(11世紀)は創建当初の中央円蓋を失い，現在はバシリカ式プランで14世紀の2層式の西正面をもつ。アプスに残る〈玉座の聖母子〉〈聖体拝領〉，ベマの〈キリストの昇天〉を中心とする壁画は，いずれも11世紀の作例。
