Also called a vaginal magnifier, it is a stereomicroscope with a magnification of 6 to 40 times, equipped with a powerful lighting device and attached to a support stand that allows easy focus adjustment. It is a powerful diagnostic device that directly observes the cervix-vaginal area, which is the most common site for cervical cancer, and is particularly useful for discovering asymptomatic and undetected preclinical cancer (early cancer) that cannot be seen with the naked eye. A colpomicroscope has an even higher magnification of 100 to 200 times, and is used to observe cells on the surface of tissue by staining them with vital stains.

Colposcopy

Diagnosis is made using a colposcope, and is also called a magnifying colposcopic examination. This diagnostic method is effective in identifying the location of lesions, and an accurate diagnosis can be made by combining it with cytology and colposcopy, and a biopsy (targeted tissue examination) that targets abnormal areas identified by colposcopy. It is also useful as a method to target those who need detailed examination after cytology performed on a large number of people in a mass screening. By combining colposcopy with cytology, it is possible to detect precancerous lesions such as highly dysplastic epithelium, as well as early cancers such as intraepithelial carcinoma and early invasive cancer, and the cure rate for uterine cancer has improved dramatically. It also allows for the minimization of bladder and rectal damage, and allows for effective and appropriate reduction surgery.

腟(ちつ)拡大鏡ともいい、6～40倍の拡大率をもった立体顕微鏡に強力な照明装置をつけ、焦点調節が容易にできるような支持台に取り付けたものである。子宮頸癌(けいがん)の好発部位である子宮頸腟部を直視下に観察し、ことに肉眼で見ることのできない無症状、無自覚の臨床前癌（早期癌）を発見するための強力な診断装置である。コルポマイクロスコープはさらに倍率の高い100～200倍で、組織表面の細胞を生体染色して観察するための装置である。

コルポスコピー

コルポスコープを用いて診断することで、腟拡大鏡診ともいう。この診断法は病変の局在を知るのに有効であり、細胞診およびコルポスコピーによって確認された異常部位をねらって行う生検（ねらい組織診）の3法を併用することによって正確な診断がなされる。また、集団検診で多人数に行った細胞診の要精密検査者を対象に実施する方法としても有用である。コルポスコピーは細胞診と併用することによって高度異形成上皮などの前癌病変および上皮内癌や初期浸潤癌など早期癌の発見が可能となり、子宮癌の治癒率は飛躍的な向上をきたした。また、これによって、膀胱(ぼうこう)や直腸の障害を少なくする最小にして有効、適切な縮小手術ができるようになった。
