Japanese: 薄様 - うすよう
Usuyou - Usuyou
〘Noun〙① A name for washi paper. Torinoko paper made by thinly slicing the bark of the gampi tree. It can also be made from kozo paper . In the past, it was used to copy waka poems and documents, to wrap things, and to tie children's hair. Tissue paper. Thin paper. ⇔Thick. ※Utsubo (c. 970-999), Naishi no Takumi, "I wrote it in a hurry, and it was drawn thinly." ※Shigoki - April 14, 1435, Eikyou 7th year ( 1435), "I started playing with a thin layer of paper." ② A type of color in layered clothes. When wearing several layers of clothing, the layering method is to gradually lighten the color from the top until the last layer is white. ※Donbanainden Shozokusho (around 1539) "Five robes, single color, light crimson, one shu, two shu, three tan, four light red plum, five white, six white, seven white"③ A type of armor. It is a type of yanagui , so named because it is made of folded paper. Thin-patterned mafutagi . ※Yanagusho (around 1238) "Arrow <omitted> Thin-patterned. Thin-patterned. Can be prepared for both the elderly and young . "④ = thin-paper ② [Etymology] (1) Normal washi paper is generally thick, so thin-paper is used to refer to thin paper.
(2) From the mid-Heian period onwards, kaishi were used for letters of affection or gifts to intimate partners, and in addition to seasonal colours, they were also used to accompany flowers or other items appropriate to the occasion. Because they were thin and see-through, they were used in a "thin layer" when writing. In waka poetry gatherings, women's kaishi were usually thin and layered, with the poem written on the top page and the author's name written on the edge of the bottom page.
