A tayu (a performer of Gidayu-bushi). (1) The first (1792-1855, Kansei 4-Ansei 2) was a disciple of the 4th Takemoto Somedayu. After passing through the names of Tsudayu and Kajidayu, he took the name of the 5th Somedayu in 1825 (Bunsei 8). In 1848 (Kaei 1), he became Takemoto Echizen Daijo. (2) The second (1839-1912, Tenpo 10-Taisho 1), real name Sakurai Gensuke, commonly known as Hozenji, was from Kyoto. He was the son of Takemoto Banryuken and became a disciple of Takemoto Yamashiro (Yamashiro no Jō). He took the name of Midoridayū II in the plays of the Kyoto dojo in 1864 (Genji 1), and began performing at the Matsushima Bunraku Theatre in Osaka in 1876 (Meiji 9). In contrast to the magnificent yagurashita (stage-acting) performer Koshijidayū II (Takemoto Settsudaijō), he excelled in sewamono (traditional Japanese dramas) with his modest, austere style of performance, and was well received by connoisseurs.
