Tights (English spelling)

Tights (English spelling)
A stretchy leg garment that tightly envelops the skin from the waist to the feet. It is worn by both men and women in extremely strenuous activities such as ballet, gymnastics, and circus, and is also called this term when it is attached to the upper body. This type of tight leg garment is generally called hose, and has been seen since the 6th century BC. Early on, it was made of leather, but it gradually developed from cloth to woven fabric and net. From the late Middle Ages to the early modern period in Europe, hose made of cloth were the most common leg garment. In the 16th century, trunk hose that covered the waist to the thighs came into use, and hose were effectively separated into trunk hose and stockings, and gradually knitted ones appeared. Modern tights appeared after the mid-19th century, due to the development of knitting technology and the spread of sports. The development of knitted tights had a significant impact on ballet technique, allowing ballet dancers to jump and spin freely in the air. There is also a type of tights called opera length, which is like a pair of leggings with no ankle-length parts. They come in a wide variety of colors, mainly flesh-colored, white, pink, and black. In France, tights are called "mayo" because Mayot, the costumer at the Paris Opera, improved them for ballet use in the early 19th century and made them part of the ballet uniform.
